A Study On Loyola High School - 1845 Words

Loyola High School is a private English- Speaking Catholic Secondary School for boys located in Montreal Quebec, and was administered by the Jesuit Order and founded in the 1840’s. This private school had become part of the mandatory core curriculum that includes the Program on Ethics and Religious Culture (ERC). However, before this addition of the ERC program that was passed by the Minister of Education of Quebec in 2008, the school’s main lessons for religious education surrounded protestant faith, which concentrates on the new teachings of Catholicism. Loyola did not want to accept the ERC program due to the school being heavily based on catholic teachings, and proposed an exemption application to the Minister of Education in Quebec. The application of the act represented the thought of the school’s private teaching to be different from other schools in Quebec. Furthermore, the Minister denied the exemption due to Loyola demanding the program to be taught fro m only a Catholic perspective, which goes against the guidelines of the ERC program. Although the Minister can grant an equivalence of the ERC program to private schools, the Minister did not want to accept Loyola’s application because it did not advance as a program that reviewed a multi-religious framework, as well as did not study other religions through neutral studies. Loyola brought an application for judicial review of the Minister’s decision to the Superior Court.
